Cambridge is a university city, and the county town of Cambridgeshire. It was granted its city charter in 1951 in recognition of its history, administrative importance and economic success. There has been a profusion of science parks on the city’s outskirts, many of them owned or leased by university colleges. Indeed, there are 131,800 local residents in the city and non-metropolitan district. Of this total, 98.3% were economically active or not claiming benefits in 2016. Interestingly, the city has a high proportion of jobs in the highest-paid professional, managerial and administrative categories (32.6%, against the UK average of 23.5%). Over 24,450 companies are located in the city, and the total turnover of these companies was £35.6 billion in 2015-16.
